About the book:
"James Carroll’s The Truth at the Heart of the Lie is at once a passionate love letter to the enduring beauty of the Catholic faith and a passionate indictment of the clericalism of the Catholic Church. This moving and revelatory book, written from deep personal experience, takes us to the heart of one of the great institutional and existential crises of our times.” --Stephen Greenblatt, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Swerve and Will in the World

The Free Press & The Constitution: Martha Minow on Saving the News

PROGRAM UPDATE 8/19/21:
We have just heard from Congressman Jamie Raskin that he has been called away from his Outer Cape days to head back to Washington to close the deal on the infrastructure bill. The bad news is that means he will not be with us at our August 25 fundraising event.

We've still got plenty to talk about, and hope you'll want to stick with us!

Martha Minow will be with us, and we're still looking forward to talking with you about her new book, Saving the News and all of our dreams for a better future for America's free press. By the way, Sophie Hills reviews Martha Minow's new book in the August 19 issue of the Independent.

Martha Minow’s new book, Saving the News, examines how the decimation of local news has allowed disinformation to flourish. Yet, she has said, “the framers understood how central the press was and is to the maintenance of a constitutional democracy.” Minow has taught at Harvard Law School since 1981 and was its dean from 2009 to 2017.  She clerked for Justice Thurgood Marshall of the United States Supreme Court.

This event will be held outside in the Hall’s back garden, weather permitting.
PLEASE BRING A LAWN CHAIR OR BLANKET FOR SEATING.

Tickets $45 BUY TICKETS HERE - limited quantities available

Jamie Raskin is professor of constitutional law who has called for a renewal of people’s support for local journalism, saying “A free and vibrant press is essential to our democracy.” Raskin teaches at American University and represents Maryland’s 8th congressional district in the U.S. house of representatives. He was the lead impeachment manager in the second senate trial of Donald Trump.

Ed Miller, editor of the Provincetown Independent moderates a conversation between two of America’s leading constitutional scholars who have spoken out in support of local journalism.

Co-hosted by local stars Stephen Russell and Vanessa Vartabedian, local storytellers will share with us the challenges and joys of finding home in Wellfleet. Local musicians will provide the melody.

Finding a year-round home in Wellfleet has long been challenging and has gotten much harder in the last couple of years. What does it mean to have a home? What does it mean to not have a home? What is the intersection between stable homes and sustainable communities? And what the heck is a “housing angel”? (Hint: Desperate times call for generous measures!)

Come celebrate YOUR Wellfleet community and join in the fun as we explore the meaning of home and its place in the greater community!

Musical lineup:
Broadway Central, Jim Rohrer & Katie Hickey, The Beat Greens, The Narrow Land String Band, Alex Brewer, and Fred Magee

Storytellers:
Gary Joseph, Elizabeth & Jason Salen, Dick Morrill, and more!

About the films:
Clay is an open letter to creatives everywhere in search of their own voice. Steve Kemp, a ceramic artist for over 40 years, explores his lifelong journey from apprentice to master. His unique voice and unwavering dedication to the craft have been carefully molded over time, influenced by lessons from his late teacher, shaped by the constant struggles encountered in life and love, and inspired by the natural beauty of Cape Cod.

2021Aug4_WhiteSpaceSOCIALSv2 (1).jpg

The Award winning White Space highlights the experiences of four women in white spaces on Cape Cod. Their stories are uniquely their own, but many people of color can relate to what these women experience. This film is about representation and what it feels like when a space is not welcoming or even hostile to people of color. It is about how people of color see and are seen in white spaces. How people of color see themselves in white spaces and what it takes to navigate those spaces. Even though white people are not the center of this story, white viewers can reflect on their own actions in white spaces and challenge themselves to exist as more than bystanders and to behave like the allies they think they are.

About the filmmaker:
Michael Cestaro created his Cape-based creative marketing company Up Above in 2015 after eight years of developing award-winning marketing campaigns and video and photography content for top industry agencies. Up Above came from the core belief that marketing content could be honest and still look beautiful. in addition to his work with Up Above, Michael has made two short documentary films, Clay and most recently the award-winning White Space. He lives on Cape Cod with his wife and two daughters

About Mozelle:
The immensely talented singer Mozelle Andrulot grew up in Eastham and attended Lesley University where she studied Liberal Arts. Her career has taken her to New York City and London where she performed at the SoHo House in both cities. Here on the Cape, she’s performed at Mahoney’s, Tin Pan Alley, The Muse and Bootleggers in Provincetown, and has sold out shows at Wellfleet Preservation Hall and the Yarmouth Cultural Center. This “jazz jewel” has graced the stage with local notable jazz artists Bruce Abbot, Fred Fried and Doug Riccardi, among others!

Alex has a unique style all his own, an authentic voice unafraid to explore varying terrains, while always staying true to his down-to-earth, yet decidedly offbeat nature. For those who savor precise and powerful lyrics, this show should not be missed.

Christina Clancy, author of The Second Home, a novel set in Wellfleet, will discuss her 2020 debut and her forthcoming novel Shoulder Season with Karen Dukess, who's novel The Last Book Party is set in Truro. Their conversation will cover their love for the Outer Cape and the people and places that inspired their work. They'll also discuss the adaptation of The Second Home for television (the novel has been optioned by TriStar for a miniseries starring Nicolaj Coster-Waldau from Game of Thrones). This will be a casual, fun and interactive conversation.

SHOULDER SEASON COVER.jpg

About the authors:
Christina Clancy is a Madison, Wisconsin-based writer with family ties to South Wellfleet dating back to the 1880s. Her debut, The Second Home, was released in June 2020, and her second novel, Shoulder Season, will be published July 6, 2021, St. Martin's Press. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Chicago Tribune, and in The Sun Magazine and various literary journals. She holds a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and previously taught at Beloit College.

She has blogged on raising boys for The Huffington Post and written book reviews for USA Today. She has a degree in Russian Studies from Brown University and a Master’s in Journalism from Columbia University. Visit The Wellfleet Historical Society and Museum for more info.

About the film:
WE STILL LIVE HERE (Âs Nutayuneân) tells a remarkable story of cultural revival by the Wampanoag of Southeastern Massachusetts. Their ancestors ensured the survival of the Pilgrims in New England, and lived to regret it. Now they are saying loud and clear in their Native tongue, Âs Nutayuneân—
We Still Live Here.

The film, by Anne Makepeace is a lyrical, poetic portrait detailing the reclamation of a language and how integral that is to culture and music.

2021Jun22_WeLiveHereSQUARE (1).jpg

About Linda Coombs:

Linda has a 45 year background working in museums, including Boston Children’s Museum for 11 years, 30 years in the Wampanoag Indigenous Program at Plymouth Plantation, and 9 years at the Aquinnah Cultural Center.

In her own words: “In addition to my knowledge and understanding of Wampanoag/Native history and culture, one of my main areas of focus is the appropriate representation of Wampanoag/Native people so that the stereotypes, misconceptions, distortions that occur as part of the usual, accepted telling of history can be eliminated and replaced with accurate, true information. It is critical to make audiences aware of these flaws in order to change their perceptions of Native people, and have them gain a more comprehensive understanding of Wampanoag/Native people, cultures and histories.”

There is nothing I know of that’s anything like the Wampanoag case.

Outdoor Staged Reading: The Fourth Wall *Fri. 5/14*

Friday May 14th at 4pm, in the backyard:

Wellfleet Preservation Hall presents a staged reading of A.R. Gurney’s  “The Fourth Wall”
This is a free event with advance registration required. Bring a lawn chair or blanket for seating.

Directed by John Shuman, who previously directed  “The Open House” by Will Eno and Gurney’s “The Love Course” for the Hall. All local cast!

About the playwright:
A. R. Gurney was a prolific and popular playwright whose plays include  “Sylvia”, “The Dining Room” and “Love Letters”.  He often explored  dramatic techniques that produced innovative  forms  to tell his story . In many of his  plays the audience has a role in the proceedings. Their presence is a part of the play. This meta style led to Gurney ultimately tackling this form head-on as he does in “ The Fourth Wall”. The fourth wall is a theatrical convention for the space between the audience and the actors on stage.  The actors can not see thru  nor are aware of the wall- the audience can.  In this hilarious and moving play four characters attempt to “get through” the wall and fathom why they are there behind it.  The dilemma compares to what all humans do in attempting to comprehend their lives.

This program is supported in part by a grant from the Wellfleet Cultural Council, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a stage agency.

About the series: Among a host of masterpieces and just plain ripping-good stories, film director Alfred Hitchcock (1899 - 1980) remains primarily known as the Master of Suspense in movies that cleverly manipulate audiences through horror (Psycho, 1960; The Birds, 1963), spy “dramedies” (The Lady Vanishes, 1938; Notorious, 1946), and picaresque innocent-man-on-the-run thrillers (The 39 Steps, 1935; North by Northwest, 1959). Unbeknownst to most fans, Hitchcock explored other genres, too, including two Period Costume Dramas that took place in 1820 Cornwall and 1840s Australia, and two comedies, one Screwball and one dark tongue-in-cheek.
